In just over 3 months I went from Insta-illiterate with only 17 followers to over 1,100 followers using 3 simple hacks that I have to share. So much of social media looks like a magic show but the truth is it’s really simple once you know the tricks.
Before I give it all away, it’s critical to note that Instagram, along with all social media and marketing for your business, should have a strategy. A strategy is defined as “a plan of action designed to achieve an overall aim”. If you are going to be on any social media platform, Instagram included, there needs to be a reason more than just “because-everyone-else-is-so-I-have-to”.
You need to have an end goal in mind, then figure out what you need to do in order to reach that goal. Some examples include:
- getting leads which you will then try to convert into clients or customers
- creating an image for your business
- creating a buzz about a certain product release
- publicizing a promotion
- monetizing Instagram by building up a following then selling advertising on your page
Figure out what your goal is, what you need to reach that goal, then get posting!
So how did I grow my following so quickly?
First, have a “pretty” page and post “pretty” pictures that your target follower is interested in. Instagram is all about the imagery. What kind of imagery you need depends on who you are, what you’re trying to convey and who you are trying to reach. However, poorly lit pictures, ugly quotes and random shots of empty sky don’t sell anyone.
Second, go and follow people who are the kind of people that you want to be followed by. You can find them via Instagram recommendations, searches or (yes, this is legal) by following the followers of your competitors. This results in those you follow noticing you, as well as Instagram picking up your signal and recommending you to others.
Lastly, use industry and trending hashtags. Hashtags (#thesethings) are the way that people find images on Instagram and you should use as many as you can. Don’t just make up your own. Use the ones that others are already searching for in your genre so that they will find you.
Special thanks to my fab social media teammate, Tova Herskovitz, for much of these insights.
This worked for me and I know it will work for you too.
